Here is How we Treat Algae Bloom in Koi Pond

Water is a media to ground people. And water is life. What happens if our water is ill?

You might already seen all the algae bloom disgusting pictures on social media, news and local newspapers. Algae bloom is a symptom of climate change, and each of us need to face the responsibility as clean water is what we live upon.

Here I did an experiment on treating the koi pond full of algae with our organics digester. I started with an 8 oz initial doze on the first day, and downgraded to 2oz daily for the next 6 days. If you see the comparison in the picture below, it has been a lot greener in the before picture (above). During the 7 days, algae has turned yellow and detached from the button and rocks, disolving and sinking to the bottom of the pond. Water has become clear again and the fish seemed to love it.

I belive the improved FengShui even attracted some red dragonflies. There are not much falling leaves right now in the summer. This autumn, I will use another biological nonchemical treatment to deal with the dead leaves.

This very promising results by Organic Digester made me more ambitious about treating a bigger water body. With some research and a dear friend’s referral, I found the Blue Ribbon Committee for the Rehabilitation of Clear Lake is doing a great job on Clear Lake algae bloom issues.

I have the honor to be connected to Jennifer. Jennifer is the Nonpoint Source Program Manager of Central Valley Water Board. It feels great to receive her very warm and detailed responsive email. Where Jennifer is very kind to share that the California Harmful Algal Blooms Portal has a lot of information and resources regarding Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs). And you can find more information on the page focusing on mitigation.

Virtue, Nature, and Moral Agency in the Xunzi

In Xunzi, the author emphasized on what can we learn from an earthworm’s living attitude: Single mindedness.

  • 蚓无爪牙之利,筋骨之强,上食埃土,下饮黄泉,用心一也
  • Earthworms have no sharp claws or teeth, no strong muscle or bones, and yet above ground they feast on the mud, and below they drink at the yellow springs. This is because they keep their mind on one thing

Don’t laugh. It is full of mindfulness if you dig and eat single mindedly like a worm.

The Little Book of Pupu’s Worm (1)

What’s the story of Pupu’s Garden

I have raised worms for 3 years now, from 100 red wigglers to now more than 30000 constantly eating and pooping and making baby worms. These 3 main activities are all very beneficial to us:

  • Eating: Worms decompose organic matter from your kitchen, all these apple cores, the banana peels, the artichoke pedals or things you don’t think they are edible, like cardboards, weeds from your yard. They munch munch munch on, and I feel very rewarding raising a huge group of creatures while they don’t really need a lot of attention.
  • Pooping: Pupu’s worms work day and night pooping and recycling the nutrients back. These nutrients are digested and broken into smaller particles. Your crops and plants will be so happy to grasp those easy accessible nutrients along with beneficial aerobic bacteria.
  • Making baby worms: Worms do not make baby worms directly; baby worms are hatched from worm eggs, also known as cocoons. If you observe these cocoons closely enough, I would think there is a whole universe inside it! Yes, a whole universe of limitless potential of turning compost to the plant food!
    • You have to watch this, how worm egg hatches video on Youtube: They are amazing!
    • Stay tuned for The Little Book of Pupu’s Worm (2)

Welcome to Pupu’s Garden

We start your flourish gardening solution with soil improvement by hiring our diligent working Pupu’s Worms. You might ask why we are called Pupu’s Garden? Because our vermiculture solution is that we use worm’s poop to restore the balance of soil and breakdown nutrition for your plants. Further more, now you don’t need to worry about kitchen waste any more.

Pupu’s Garden now features our champion composters- red wigglers. They work diligently day and night to help you turn organic trash and food waste into black gold.  In addition, these little creatures produce worm castings and restore bacteria balance back to your soil. As a result, your plants absorb broken down nutrients with more efficiency. To serve your plants even better, Pupu’s Garden brews Worm Tea from worm castings and Worm casting benefits:

Increase crop yields from 10% to 50%
Does not burn plants
Reduces susceptibility of plants to disease and pests
Enrich soil better to hold moisture and nutrients.
Odorless.
